Every band in this slice is a pause.
Water carrying dissolved calcium carbonate moved through the limestone at Ighoud, put down a layer, then conditions shifted. Flow changed, chemistry changed, and the next layer went down slightly differently. The colour shifts track iron and other impurities arriving with the water.
The result reads outward from the centre, the same way growth rings do. None of it was designed. All of it was recorded.
Carbonates are soft. Keep it dry and dust rather than wash.
