Grossular is named after the gooseberry.
The first crystals described were a pale green, and the mineralogist naming them reached for grossularia, the botanical name for the fruit. The name stuck to the whole species. So a deep red garnet like this one is, technically, named after a green berry.
That happens because grossular's colour is not part of what makes it grossular. The species is defined by its skeleton, calcium and aluminium and silica. Colour comes from whatever trace element happens to have slipped into the structure while it grew. Chromium and vanadium give the intense green of tsavorite. Iron gives the cinnamon of hessonite. Manganese, here, gives red.
