Six strips of mounting putty, for standing specimens at the angle you actually want to see them.
Putty does a job no stand does. A crystal with an uneven base, a cluster that only looks right tilted, a slab that wants to lean rather than sit flat: a pinch of this holds it there and lets you change your mind later. It also stops a top-heavy piece going over if the shelf gets knocked.
Two lengths. The 5 cm strips suit thumbnails and miniatures, where a small pinch at a time is all you need. The 10 cm strips are for cabinet pieces and anything top-heavy, where you want more contact under a wider base.
Permanently plastic, so it stays workable instead of curing hard. Knead a piece until it softens, press the specimen on, and twist gently to lift it off again when you want to rearrange.
Test it on porous or absorbent material before committing. Soft, chalky and highly porous specimens can mark where any putty has been in long contact, so use the smallest amount that holds and keep it to the base.
