A polished freeform cut from a fossil log, from a tree that was alive in the Triassic and has been stone for over 200 million years.
Nothing about that is figurative. The trunk was buried, and silica-carrying groundwater moved through it and precipitated inside and around the cell walls, replacing organic tissue with quartz and chalcedony while holding the original architecture in place. Growth rings survive. So does grain direction, and knots where branches left the trunk. What you are looking at is the internal structure of a tree, recorded in silica.
The colours come from whatever was dissolved in that water rather than from the wood. Iron oxides give the reds and oranges, manganese the darker tones.
Cut as a freeform rather than sliced flat, so the grain runs over curved surfaces and reads differently depending on where you stand.
